Chapter 22
Sensitive to the decades of interrupted meals his mother had endured as a senator’s wife, Adam fully intended to let his ringing phone go to voice mail during their lunch at her favorite restaurant. He shouldn’t have even left it on; in his distraction, he’d been forgetting small courtesies lately, and that disturbed him.
She shook her head. Her freshly colored, styled, and sprayed hair did not move. “Joshie, at least check to see who’s calling. What if it’s important?”
Cringing at the nickname now only his mother could get away with, he pulled the cell from his jacket. The incoming was from his father. Not one of his assistants, but the actual man’s actual private number. His stomach tensed. “Yeah. I should take this. Sorry. I’ll be right back.”
Once he’d cleared the dining room, Adam picked up. “Dad. Is everything okay?”
Apparently everything was not okay. Refusing to discuss the matter on the phone, former senator Sam Goldberg demanded Adam get his ass down to his law firm as soon as humanly possible, but only in a way that would not worry his mother.
Ruth Goldberg merely sighed when Adam returned to their table and told her a lighter version of the request.
“Just as well.” She dabbed at her mouth with the linen napkin, placed it over her plate, and pushed out a weary smile. “I don’t need the dessert calories, and I can get in a little shopping before my next appointment.”
Adam paid the bill and bent to kiss his mother’s powdered cheek as he saw her into a cab before he caught his own headed downtown. But once they passed Central Park, traffic crawled along Seventh Avenue. Maybe he should walk the rest of the way. It wasn’t all that far to Times Square—fifteen, twenty blocks? Aiming an unfocused gaze out the window, he ran a hand through his hair, tapped a couple of fingers against his drumming leg. Dad never demanded. Sam Goldberg cajoled, he persuaded, but he did not demand. Adam could only imagine two things that would make his father resort to such drastic action: the divorce or the campaign.
God, what now? How bad is it?
Finally, the cab started moving again. He tuned in to the thrum of the city—the other cars, the pedestrians—letting the familiarity of Manhattan soothe him. New York was his town, the four undergraduate years at Fordham the only time he’d lived elsewhere and that had only been in the Bronx. New York ran in his bloodstream and he couldn’t imagine leaving. Of course, he’d have to if he ran and won—warmth spreading through him as he remembered Charlie saying if you run and when you win—at least for the length of the congressional sessions.
Then, feeling suddenly despondent from missing him, the oddly polite text messages from Orlando only making the distance worse, Adam’s mouth sagged and he fell back against the seat. His rational side floated a trial balloon that if he had to be in Washington for months at a time, perhaps it was better not to have an emotional attachment.
